Domino
When most people think of dominoes, they picture the small, black and white rectangular blocks used for gaming. A domino is typically twice as long as it is wide, and each side has a number of spots (known as pips) to identify it from the rest. A domino can have a maximum of 28 pips, and it may also have a line down the center to divide it visually into two squares, called ends. Other nicknames for the pieces include bones, cards, tiles, men, or spinners. Many kids and adults enjoy lining up dominoes and then knocking them down.
The Domino Effect
In business, the domino effect can have positive or negative effects. Positive effects can increase efficiency and productivity, but the opposite is true for negative impacts. Team leaders can mitigate the negative impact of the domino effect by fostering a positive workplace culture with communication, structured beginnings, accountability, task prioritization, and shared goals.
Domino’s Pizza has been named one of the best fast food companies to work for by Glassdoor, but the company hasn’t always had such great success. In fact, in 2004 Domino’s was nearly bankrupt and on the verge of closure. A leadership change that year and a difficult economy combined to make the company’s troubles even worse.
To turn things around, the company introduced new items to their menu and made improvements in technology to streamline operations. These efforts led to better efficiency and profitability, and the company was able to overcome their financial difficulties.
Today, Domino’s continues to thrive as a leading pizza delivery company. Its headquarters are located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and it employs over 400,000 workers. The company has also innovated with new ways to order pizza, including emoji-based texting and Amazon Echo devices.
Like the pieces in a domino set, each member of a team has their own role to play. Some team members are catalysts, or the “domino” that starts the chain reaction, and others are receivers who follow through with the chain. It’s important for the entire team to understand their roles, and for each individual to be willing to take the lead when necessary.
Domino
Mercenary and mutant shapeshifter Domino has the ability to cause improbable events to happen. This power manifests as a psionic aura that alters probabilities. It can range from making an enemy’s equipment malfunction to hitting just the right button to shut down a machine. Using this skill, Domino once helped protect mutants on Utopia, and she joined a S.H.I.E.L.D incarnation of X-Force when they investigated the clandestine Weapon X program. Despite her brief romance with Cable, she has since struck out on her own. The emotion-manipulating Psycho-Man later manipulated Domino into attacking Copycat, whom she resented for her role in her year-long captivity. Domino and a new incarnation of X-Force eventually defeated the Skornn entity.
