Domino (Movie Review)

Domino (Neena Thurman) is a powerful mutant who specializes in destabilizing the balance of power. Able to manipulate the laws of probability and shift odds in her favor, she is a weapons expert, a superb athlete and martial artist, and an accomplished linguist. A frequent collaborator with Cable, she is also a skilled hacker and an experienced mercenary. She was possessed by the Undying alien Aentaeros, but was freed by Cable. She rejoined X-Force when Pete Wisdom offered to turn the team into a proactive black ops unit. Despite being resurrected by alien technology grafts and subsequently possessed by the Undying mutant Corben, she later left to pursue freelance work again.

Domino was one of the children born to the U.S. government’s Project Armageddon, designed to genetically engineer the perfect weapon using a precognitive mutant surrogate. After the experiment failed, Domino was taken in by a Chicago priest and raised as her sister, Beatrice. Domino learned that she had a younger brother named Lazarus, whose mutant emotion-controlling powers could destroy civilization. She attacked a base run by Beatrice’s cult, the Armajesuits, and rescued Lazarus, whom she then gave to the priest who cared for her as a child.

In addition to her powers, Domino’s body generates a subconscious psionic aura that alters probabilities, causing her to receive “good luck” while others suffer from “bad luck.” This effect can vary from having an enemy’s equipment malfunction to hitting just the right button to shut down an overloading machine. Domino’s psionic aura also allows her to generate an energy field that protects her from physical harm.

Although Domino is an expert with a variety of weapons, she often prefers to use a staff that fires projectiles. She is a natural at destabilizing the balance of power, and she is particularly skilled in improvising tactics on the fly. In the past, she has used her abilities to disrupt a Techno-organic World Engine, kill the Undying mutant Semijan, and free mutants held captive by Aentaeros and the U.S. military.

When Domino is not pursuing her freelance career, she works alongside X-Force. She has helped avert a mutant apocalypse in a parallel reality, battled the Leper Queen’s Sapien League, and defended the reformed mutant island Utopia from rogue CIA agent Ekatarina Gryaznova’s techno-organic superweapons. She and Cable have a close working relationship and share a romantic connection.

Domino’s name derives from the Latin word for “fate.” The concept of domino, or a series of events that inevitably collide, inspired both the game and the term. It is used metaphorically to refer to a chain reaction in the form of a fall of a domino, but it can also apply to causal links in larger systems such as global politics or financial markets. In popular culture, the phrase is also used to describe a person who has the ability to influence the lives of many others, much like a domino can affect those around her.
