The Domino Effect

Domino (sometimes Dominoes) is a popular board game played by a group of players, usually two or more. Each domino is a flat, thumb-sized rectangular block with its face divided into two parts, one blank and the other bearing from one to six dots or pips, similar to those on a die. A set of 28 such pieces, arranged edge to edge on a table or other surface, forms the foundation for playing the game.

The joy of watching a line of dominoes fall – a single small movement triggering the next piece to fall – demonstrates an important aspect of the law of inertia. This simple concept also applies to many aspects of our lives. The origin of the word “domino” is unclear, but it’s possible that it stems from an earlier sense of the term, meaning a large, hooded cloak worn together with a mask at carnival season or at masquerades. The word is also associated with the game of domino, which was first recorded in France around 1750.
