The Domino Effect in Fiction

Domino is a small rectangular block, usually made of wood or plastic, that has one side marked with an arrangement of dots resembling those on dice. It is used in games with other blocks, called dominoes, to form a sequence of outcomes that depend on the order of play. Dominoes are sometimes also called bones, cards, tiles, stones, spinners, or tickets. The word comes from the Latin domina, meaning “fate” or “luck.”

The first play in a game of dominoes is usually made by a player who has a double. This is known as making the “the set” or “the lead.” Other players may play onto this double, but the person who made the initial “set” or “lead” must be able to complete a chain of plays before the next player begins his turn.

Many different rules and variations of the game exist, but all of them are based on the same principle. After the tiles are shuffled, each player draws from the stock until he has a domino that he can play. Some games rule that a player must play the first tile; others require that he have a particular type of domino, such as a double or a triple. The heaviest domino in a player’s hand determines the first play in most games.

When a player makes a mistake in his play, it is usually called a misplay. In most cases, the error must be forgotten; however, if the mistake can affect a player’s score, he is required to recall his tile and make a correct play. In the case of a tie, new dominoes are drawn to break it.

Whether you write fiction off the cuff or plan carefully, your story should flow smoothly, with scenes that connect into one another like a domino cascade. The domino effect helps ensure that your story follows a natural progression of events and doesn’t run counter to readers’ expectations for what is logical.

For example, if your main character acts immorally in a scene, it will be difficult for readers to accept him as their hero. If you want your story to have a satisfying ending, the domino effect will help you ensure that all of your characters’ actions follow from a well-thought-out plan and logically lead up to the big event.

For example, if your character decreases his sedentary leisure time, he is likely to increase his fitness level and, as a result, improve his diet. This is because his shift in behavior causes a similar change in other behaviors, such as eating less fat.
