Dominoes – The Basics of Playing Dominoes

Dominoes are small flat blocks used as gaming objects. Also known as bones, men, or pieces, they are usually twice as long as they are wide and have a square-shaped face on one side with a line in the center that divides it visually into two equal-sized squares or ends. Both ends of a domino are marked with an arrangement of dots, or pips, that range from six to zero. Those marks identify the domino’s value and allow it to be placed edge to edge against another domino of the same type, or with a matching end, to form a chain that gradually increases in length as one player plays tiles.

Most domino games involve positioning the tiles in a line of play. The line of play is called the layout, string, or line of play. The basic instructions for most of the domino games shown on this website involve placing tiles in a line that matches the pips on the open end of the last tile played.

Each player in turn then places a new domino on the table. The new domino must be positioned such that its two matching ends are adjacent to each other. The new domino must be played square to an existing tile if it has the same number of pips, or perpendicular to a double if that is the case. The result is a developing snake-line of dominoes, the shape and length of which depends on the rules of the game and the limitations of the playing surface.

The most common games of domino are blocking and scoring games, but a number of other games exist. These include games that are adaptations of card games (once popular in areas where religious proscriptions against playing cards prevailed) and solitaire games.

When a domino is played incorrectly, it is called a misplay. The error must be corrected before the next player has a chance to play. If it is not possible to correct the mistake before the next turn, the player must forfeit his turn.

After a tumultuous start to the year, Domino’s was looking for ways to revitalize sales and give the company a fresh image. Among the new changes the company introduced was a relaxed dress code and a new leadership training program that emphasizes listening to employees.

The Detroit Free Press reports that this approach to employee relations was successful, helping the company rebound from its COVID-19 slump. The company has been making investments in cutting-edge technology as well, including a purpose-built pizza delivery vehicle. Those innovative ideas are sure to add to the company’s bottom line, even though some may not have immediate benefits for customers. Still, Domino’s has a clear plan for the future and seems to be on track toward its goal of 25,000 global locations by 2025. If they can keep their focus on customers, Domino’s should be around for a while. It may not be the largest pizza chain, but it is a very good one.
