The Domino Effect

Domino is a popular game in which players try to set up lines of dominoes that will eventually lead to a single piece falling. This domino effect is also referred to as the “domino principle,” and it’s a good example of how even tiny actions can have significant results. The word domino was first used in English in 1750, but the game itself is believed to have been around much longer.

The modern game of domino consists of rectangular tiles with two square ends that are either marked or blank. The backs of these pieces are usually indistinguishable and do not affect play. Most sets of dominoes have the same pattern or color on all the faces, but some sets have different designs. Dominoes are typically made of wood or plastic, although they can also be found in bone and ivory.

To play, one person places a domino on the edge of the table and then slides another domino to its right place, usually against the adjacent edges of other dominoes already in place. Then a third domino is played in the same fashion, and so on. The first domino to fall must touch the end of the preceding domino in such a way that the resulting line of dominoes is a straight or nearly straight line. A double domino may be played by straddling the adjacent sides of a previous tile, but additional doubles must be placed perpendicular to them, not at right angles to the line.

While most games involve emptying one’s hand and blocking opponents’ play, some rely on scoring the total number of dots in a losing player’s remaining dominoes. Regardless of the type of dominoes being used, it is important that players keep track of their current score.

A physics professor at the University of Toronto recently performed an experiment to demonstrate how powerful the domino effect can be. He set up a series of 13 dominoes, each about one-and-a-half times larger than the last. The first domino was so small it could only be set up with tweezers, while the 13th was more than three feet tall and weighed 100 pounds. Morris showed that it only takes a very slight push for the entire chain to come down.
