How Domino’s Pizza Works

Domino is a series of small rectangular blocks used in games. They have identifying marks on one side and are blank or identically patterned on the other. Each domino has the potential to push another domino, and if it does, the process continues until all the dominoes have been pushed over.

When Hevesh puts together her mind-blowing domino setups, she follows a version of the engineering-design process. She starts by considering the theme or purpose of an installation, and she brainstorms images or words that might relate to that idea. From there, she creates a blueprint for the track that will be laid out to form the desired effect. She then calculates how many dominoes she will need and where they will be placed on the track. Finally, she tests out her design by laying down the first dominoes and nudges them around to see what the overall result will look like.

Like a falling domino, a good book plot has the same effect. Each plot beat, or turning point, is a domino that must fall to propel the story forward. The key to success in plotting a novel is keeping the big picture in mind as you tackle each step of the story. Whether you plot your novel off the cuff or carefully outline each scene, every action must lead to the next in order to build tension and a satisfying ending.

A business must also have a clear vision and strategy for the future in order to thrive. For Domino’s, this includes embracing technology to keep up with the competition and offering new ways for customers to order pizza. It also means listening to employees and encouraging feedback, which is a large part of what makes Domino’s such an amazing place to work.

In Domino’s case, the value of listening to employees paid off big time when a CEO change was needed. When Domino’s hired Brandon Doyle as CEO, he stuck to the company’s core values and prioritized employee satisfaction. This included implementing new policies, such as a more relaxed dress code and improved college recruitment programs.

Domino’s also put a strong focus on technology, including creating a proprietary Domino’s Delivery Vehicle and working to offer deliveries via robots and drones. These efforts have contributed to the company’s ability to continue delivering pizza to its millions of loyal customers.

As Domino Data Lab grows, we are excited to partner with IBM in making it an end to end data science platform. This collaboration between IBM and Domino allows teams to work cohesively while providing the flexibility they need to explore, run, test and deploy their models. It also enables them to easily connect to version control systems and other tools that make them more productive and successful. This is the true power of Domino Data Lab and why it’s the choice for teams that want to be agile, innovative and collaborative.
