Domino is a term that refers to any of several different games played with small, thumb-sized, rectangular blocks that have one face blank or bearing from one to six pips (dots): 28 such pieces form a complete set. These are used to build up lines of adjacent pieces that match in value, either by blocking a line already formed or by scoring a point. The word is also used for any of the resulting constructions or other arrangements of dominoes, as well as for the series of events that occur when a single domino is tipped over by its neighbor, thereby starting a chain reaction that results in the falling of all subsequent pieces in sequence.
Domino has been around for centuries, but it’s most famous for its use in gambling and gaming. The game’s popularity was fueled in part by the fact that it was easy to learn and quick to play. This was especially true for the older, more experienced players who could identify patterns in the sequences of numbers that would be triggered by the placement of just one piece.
Aside from the traditional blocking and scoring games, many more complex dominoes exist, most of which are adaptations of card games or were developed in order to circumvent religious proscriptions against playing cards. Some are variants of Concentration, while others involve constructing chains that match in number or pattern.
When you have a very large set, it’s possible to create artistic designs using the dominoes. Hevesh, a YouTube star who goes by the name Hevesh5, has built a following for her impressive creations with thousands of dominoes. She uses them to make straight and curved lines, grids that form pictures when they fall, stacked walls, and even 3D structures like pyramids and towers. Some of her largest sets can take up to 10 nail-biting minutes to fall.
In my work providing book editing services, I sometimes ask authors to consider their story as a series of dominoes that need to be tipped over in the right order to reach the final destination. This is a great way to think of the logical flow of each scene and whether or not it relates to the scenes that preceded it in a clear and logical manner.
Domino’s is doing a lot of interesting things to keep its brand relevant in the modern world. They’re embracing technology by integrating with Apple CarPlay so that customers can order pizza from their cars. They’re also focusing on building up their local business, as they are able to meet customer needs more quickly and efficiently when they’re close to home. This has been proven by their success in the United Kingdom, where they are thriving with 25,000 locations. They’ve also expanded their global presence by entering the Middle East and India. In addition to expanding their restaurant count, they’ve been experimenting with new delivery options. They’ve integrated their ordering app with Apple CarPlay, and they’re working on a service that will let customers order via text message or tweet.
